OpenAI Announces Partnership with World Association of News Publishers

Over the last year, OpenAI has aggressively pursued partnerships with media organizations and successfully made their argument for the mutual benefits these collaborations bring. For OpenAI, it’s about gaining access to vast content repositories to enhance its AI models, while media companies benefit from attribution, increased visibility, and access to state-of-the-art AI technology. Additionally, these partnerships may help OpenAI avoid potential legal issues, as each new agreement could mean one less lawsuit to deal with. This approach also sets a precedent for the industry, which other players may likely ultimately need to follow.

The latest in this string of partnerships is a collaboration with the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) to launch an intensive three-month accelerator program called the Newsroom AI Catalyst. This program will assist 128 newsrooms across Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and South Asia in adopting and implementing AI technologies.

The program combines learning modules, hands-on workshops, and a mini hackathon, ensuring newsroom stakeholders gain practical knowledge and tools to drive strategic AI initiatives. OpenAI is providing funding and technical assistance for the program.

Vincent Peyrègne, CEO of WAN-IFRA, emphasized the critical role of AI in ensuring the sustainability of news organizations in the face of declining revenues. “AI technologies can positively influence news organisations’ sustainability as long as you quickly grasp the stakes and understand how to turn it to your advantage,” he said.

Tom Rubin, Chief of Intellectual Property and Content at OpenAI, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership. “At OpenAI, we are committed to expanding opportunities through AI. This program will enhance the capabilities of 128 newsrooms worldwide, fostering a healthy ecosystem that supports quality journalism,” Rubin stated.
