The total solar eclipse that will pass over parts of Canada and the US today has certainly caught everyone’s attention.
Americans living in a 115-mile-wide swath that travels from Maine in the North to Texas in the South will be within the total eclipse zone and for about 4 minutes will experience total darkness.
Many outside that zone are making travel plans to visit so they can personally witness this rare solar event.
It is expected that one million people will visit Texas, where parts of that state will experience a total eclipse of the sun. Another half a million could be traveling to Indiana and Ohio for the same reason, according to eclipse cartographer Michael Zeiler.
Niagara Falls, on both the Canadian and American sides of the border, is another region expecting overflow crowds, as it is within the total eclipse epicenter. According to one report, some Niagara hotels were “booked for between $914 and $1,844 on April 7 into April 8, the day of the eclipse.”
It’s estimated that upwards of four million people could be on the move so they can view the total eclipse of the sun and millions more will be watching from their homes or even at special parties.
Schools in both the US and Canada are being closed or students let off early, particularly if they are near the total eclipse epicenter.
Whether they travel or not, people in every US state, Canadian province, and Mexico will be seeing at least a partial eclipse today.
So with millions watching this celestial event, is it possible that God is also making a statement during this rare celestial event?
That is certainly possible, but we need to understand that solar eclipses do happen regularly and can be predicted and not everyone is necessarily significant.
Nevertheless, we find references to a total solar eclipse in Amos 8:9 when the prophet says, “I will make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth in broad daylight.”
Another mentioned in Joel 2:31, “The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD.” This one seems to be associated with volcanic eruptions and death (columns of smoke and blood).
Perhaps the most significant reference is found in the book of Revelation, the Apostle John’s vision of events that would take place in the end time, where we read “I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood-red,” (Revelation 6:12).
The one in Revelation is preceded by a ‘great earthquake’ and then followed by stars falling from the sky and the sky being split in two, which could possibly be a reference to nuclear war (Revelation 6:13-14).
If it is a nuclear attack, this would then explain why John saw government leaders, generals, and others hiding in underground bunkers (Revelation 6:15).
The next total solar eclipse is not scheduled until August 22/23, 2044, which may be more significant, if Sir Isaac Newton is right.
